My Major Retrospective

White Cube London

My Major Retrospective is Tracey Emin’s own highly personalized review of her life. The exhibition contains nearly two hundred works centred around a biographical, wall-sized patchwork quilt, which is overlaid with hand stitched felt lettering. Paintings, drawings and collages of treasured objects and souvenirs made and compiled since early childhood are displayed along side deeply personal memorabilia. The emotion sometimes overflows with a somewhat smothering sentimentality which can border on the embarrassing for both artist and audience. But an ever present dry sense of humour and self-effacing irony help keep the balance, albeit on a tight rope. Emin’s work is warm, honest and supported by her attitude: “While most artists these days wear the Derrida in their jacket pocket. I wear my art on my sleeve”.
